Symptoms of Hip Dislocation

Hip dislocation is a painful condition that can cause a variety of symptoms including severe hip pain that worsens when the leg is moved, pain that spreads to the legs knees and back and difficulty walking or the inability to walk. It occurs when the ball of the thigh bone moves out of place within the socket of the pelvic bone. This happens when a strong force is applied to the hip joint such as in a severe fall, motor vehicle accident or sports injury.

When possible, Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians treat dislocated hips using a closed reduction procedure. In a closed reduction, the thigh and leg are manipulated in an attempt to put the ball of the femur back into the hip socket. With a closed reduction, surgery is not required. In cases where a closed reduction is not successful or where other complications are present, surgery may be required. This is referred to as an “open reduction”. With both open and closed reduction therapy, physical therapy is required to assist you in recovering.
